Fraudsters impersonate people or businesses you trust, to steal your money or personal information. They often contact you with a sense of urgency, hoping to catch you off-guard. Scammers often trick you into thinking they are a friend, family member or from organisations such as banks and local authorities. They could reach out via phone calls and request you to follow their instructions.

“I’ll need your banking credentials for further investigation/verification.”

Your security details, PIN, OTP, password, and other credentials are strictly personal. HSBC would NEVER ask for this information.

“Mum, I lost my phone, I need to get a new one. Here’s my account, can you send me some money?”

Beware of phone calls from unknown numbers. Never transfer money unless you’re certain it’s to the right person.

"There is an urgent request for action, or your passport will be cancelled. You need to click on a link that will take you to a webpage/download a mobile application."

Always be cautious of links on e-mails and texts. They may not be as genuine as you would expect.

Top tips to protect yourself from scams

Be skeptical of unsolicited calls.

Verify the caller’s identity independently.

Stay calm. Especially when the callers try to urge or threaten you for a response.

Do not open any suspicious links or download apps via a link. These can instal malicious software on to your device.

Never share your banking credentials including OTPs with anyone.

Be cautious of payment requests.
