1) How do Vishers (Fraudsters) operate?
A typical Vishing attack could follow the sequence of events explained below:
bullet The Visher sets up an automatic dialer to call all the phone numbers in a certain region.
bullet When the phone is answered by the unsuspecting victim, an automated recorded message is played. This message alerts the victim that a fraudulent activity has been conducted on his/her bank or Credit Card account and that he/she should call the phone number mentioned in the message immediately.
bullet When the victim calls the specified number, it is usually answered by an automated voice that instructs him/her to enter his/her bank or Credit Card number on the key-pad, for verification purposes. Typically, a Visher would not have any real information of the victim and address him/her as ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’.
bullet Once the victim enters his/her bank account or Credit Card details into the key-pad, the Visher has obtained the necessary information, to misuse the bank or Credit Card account fraudulently. At times, victims are also asked for the security number, mentioned on the reverse of the Credit Card.
2) How can you protect yourself from Vishing?
bullet Do not leave your personal or account details on a telephone system, based on a generic call recording, email or SMS received by you, especially if it involves the security of your bank or Credit Card account.
bullet Before calling the specified telephone number, verify if it is bank authorised, by calling the number on the reverse of your account statement.
bullet Even if the Visher is live on the call, do not provide your personal or account details. Instead request for a reference number and have the call details verified through the bank.
3) How can you do Safe and Secure Banking?
bullet Do not share your personal and/or confidential information with any unauthorised* individual or in any public domain such as blogs, forums, social networking sites and other media.
bullet Personal information refers to your account number (for example: Savings Account, Loan Account or Credit Card Account), date of birth, address, mother’s maiden name, card expiry date, contact details or Email IDs.
bullet Confidential information includes Internet Banking password, PINs (ATM, Debit Card, Credit Card, Phone Banking) or Credit Card CVV numbers etc. In case of any suspicion, please contact the Bank immediately.
